I’m originally from Keiskammahoek, a quiet rural town in the Eastern Cape. That’s where I first learned to notice scent — before I ever called it perfumery. Rain on gravel roads. The sweetness of crushed guava juice sold by vendors outside my school on a hot summer day. The sharpness of wood smoke during umcimbi. Scent was memory long before it was luxury.
